Speaking practice used to be the expensive part of learning English. Now you can do it free, every day, from your phone — here is where to start for your level.
Most people who want to improve their English do not need more grammar. They need more minutes of actually speaking — and until recently, speaking practice was the expensive part. You needed a teacher, a class, or a friend patient enough to listen.
That has changed. Today you can practise English speaking online for free, every day, from your phone. This guide explains the free options, which one to start with depending on your level and confidence, and a routine that turns short daily sessions into real fluency.
Option 1: Practise with an AI first (zero pressure)
If the idea of speaking to a stranger makes your stomach tighten, start here. An AI conversation partner lets you speak as badly as you need to, as many times as you need to, with nobody listening.
On Zeno you can do this two ways:
- Voice Mode: choose your level (Basic, Medium, Advanced) and a real-life situation — ordering at a coffee shop, a job interview, visiting a doctor — and hold a spoken conversation with the AI. A few minutes are free every day.
- AI tutor chat: type any sentence you are unsure about and it corrects it, then explains why in your own language. This is ideal for preparing what you want to say before you say it to people.
Use the AI to rehearse, not to hide. A week or two of private practice is usually enough to make the next step feel possible.
Option 2: Join live voice rooms with other learners
This is where fluency is built, because real people are unpredictable. On Zeno, live rooms called Spaces each have a topic and a small group of learners from different countries. You join with one tap, listen first if you like, and take your turn when you are ready.
Three things make this easier than it sounds:
- Voice only. There is no video, so you do not have to think about how you look.
- Everyone is a learner. Nobody is there to judge your grammar; they are nervous too.
- Quiet corrections. If you type in the room chat and make a mistake, a small tag appears that only you can see. Tap it and the tutor explains the fix.
Option 3: A regular speaking partner
Once you have met a few people you like talking to, add them as friends and practise one-to-one. A regular partner gives you continuity — you can pick up where you left off and set goals together. Our guide to getting value from a speaking partner has a simple 45-minute session format that works.
Which option should you start with?
| If you… | Start with |
|---|---|
| Freeze completely when you try to speak | Voice Mode with the AI, 5 minutes a day |
| Can speak, but slowly and with many mistakes | AI practice, then a Space twice a week |
| Speak fairly well but lack confidence | Spaces every day |
| Speak well and want polish | Spaces plus a regular partner, with focused feedback |
A 15-minute daily routine
Consistency beats long sessions. Fifteen minutes a day, every day, will do more than two hours on a Sunday.
- Warm up (3 minutes): say out loud what you did yesterday, in the past tense. Do not stop to fix mistakes.
- Speak (10 minutes): one Voice Mode conversation or a turn in a live Space.
- Review (2 minutes): read today's corrections and say each corrected sentence three times. Save any new word to your dictionary so it comes back in practice sets.
Make corrections stick
Getting corrected is only useful if you remember the fix. Two habits help more than anything else:
- Understand the reason, not just the answer. "I went to the market yesterday" is easy to copy; knowing that yesterday is finished time, so the verb must be past, is what stops the same mistake next week. This is why Zeno explains the reason in the language you think in.
- Reuse it within 24 hours. Use the corrected sentence in your next conversation on purpose. Using it once in real speech is worth ten readings.

Common worries, answered
"My English is too weak to talk to people."
If you can read this page, it is not. Start with the AI for a week, then join a beginner-friendly room and listen for the first few minutes. Say one sentence. That is enough for day one.
"What if someone is rude?"
Rooms have hosts who can mute or remove people, and you can report or block anyone in two taps. Zeno is for adults (18+), and the Community Guidelines explain what gets an account removed.
"Is it really free?"
Yes. Live Spaces, the AI tutor and the Study Room are free. Voice Mode includes a few free minutes a day. An optional PRO plan raises the AI limits for people who practise a lot.
"Do I need to install an app?"
No. Zeno runs in the browser on Android, iPhone and computers. You can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app, but there is nothing to download from a store.
Start today, not after one more course
The biggest mistake learners make is waiting until they feel ready. Nobody feels ready. The people who speak well are the ones who started speaking badly, early, and kept going. Open Zeno, say one sentence to the AI, and you have already practised more than most people do this week.
